The question I get asked most often is
My answer could be I'm running because I care about the city, but all the candidates in the race care. I'm running because I can't stand the status quo. If the person that gets elected shows up on the first day with all the answers, we'll get what we've always gotten.
There are 13 different wards focusing on what's only important to them.
I’ve learned from some of the best leaders in my professional and personal life. Every one of them had a point of view, but they didn't hold on so tightly that they couldn't learn from others, especially others with a different point of view.
The best leaders ask questions. Not the kind of questions that validate their own point of view, but rather to seek and understand a different point of view.
This is how I lead, and it's an important skill we'll need for our city council these next 4 years. Because there's a chance we'll have 7 new city council members, including the first Hispanic woman and the first Somali man. Curiosity is a skill we'll need.
I realize I'm challenging the status quo right now, by asking for you to consider me your 1st choice. I don't fit the mold. I'm a business executive and a parent. I don't know all the acronyms, or where to park on the 1st day.
My job, from day one, will be to be curious, and replace the "It's always been done that way." with “What problem are we trying to solve, now let's be creative and get outcomes."
